SIVERT - A project to enhance wireless performance

Sweden’s public innovation agency, Vinnova, with the collaboration FFI, Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation, has awarded a SEK 13.699 million development and research grant to Volvo Cars, Lund University, Volvo Group, RanLOS and RISE for the project SImulation and VErification of wiReless Technologies (SIVERT). The grant is part of the venture Electronic, software and communication – FFI.

Wireless connectivity in cars is no longer mainly about traditional infotainment features. It encapsulates full connectivity intelligence, over-the-air updates of software and maps, and a range of services such as phone as key, in-car delivery etc. It is also used as input to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functionality in the form of traffic warnings, and expected to play a larger role in both ADAS and Autonomous Drive (AD) with the introduction of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. Simulation and testing is a prerequisite for developing and ensuring performance and reliability of the wireless links that enables the use of a large range of connected applications.

The work packages in the SIVERT project are focusing on doing system simulations, developing a test setup for component testing with channel emulation, and investigating four different system verification methods on complete vehicle in lab. RanLOS with its measurement system will be part of the latter work package, where the system will be compared to an OTA multi-probe ring setup, a “wireless cable” setup and a reverberation chamber.
