En annan besökare sammanfattade veckan: “A central theme throughout Estonian Defence Week was bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology and dependable, mission-ready performance. Testing is where that trust is built. Great connecting and exchanging ideas in Tallinn.”

How do you verify wireless communication in modern defence systems

How do you verify wireless communication in modern defence systems?

Modern defence systems are becoming increasingly dependent on wireless communication. From drones and unmanned ground vehicles to tactical radio systems and autonomous platforms, robust communication is a fundamental requirement for operational capability.

But the fact that individual components work as intended does not automatically mean that the complete system will perform as expected. That is why the entire system needs to be tested and verified before moving into flight testing or operational use.

How do you verify wireless communication in modern defence systems

You can download a Swedish pdf-version of this article here: Download article

When components become a system, the conditions change
Drones, unmanned ground vehicles, tactical radio systems and autonomous platforms all rely on a stable and reliable communication link to carry out their mission.

The real challenge often begins when the antenna is integrated into the final platform. Design, materials, electronics and antenna placement all affect how the radio signal actually behaves. A system that performs well in the lab may therefore perform differently when used in a real-world environment.
When the antenna is mounted on the platform, communication performance can be affected by factors such as:

  • antenna placement
  • platform design and materials
  • polarisation
  • shadowing from other components
  • reflections from the surrounding environment
  • the interaction between multiple antennas

This is why more development projects need to complement component testing with Over-the-Air (OTA) testing of the complete system. By testing and verifying wireless communication performance under controlled and realistic conditions, development teams can better understand how the complete system actually performs before flight testing or operational deployment.

“The fact that individual components work as intended does not automatically mean that the complete system will perform as expected.”
Lars Granbom, CEO of RanLOS

Why LOS matters in many defence systems

For many defence applications, wireless communication needs to be verified under conditions that reflect operational use. For UAVs, UGVs, tactical radio systems and many other military applications, this often means Line-of-Sight (LOS), where the direct signal path between transmitter and receiver dominates.
In these environments, the antenna’s directional characteristics are critical to communication performance. Small changes in platform orientation or antenna placement can affect range, data capacity and robustness against interference, including jamming and other forms of electronic warfare.

For a reconnaissance drone, this may mean that video or sensor data does not reach the operator. Navigation may be disrupted if GNSS communication is affected. For an unmanned ground vehicle, it can impact command and control. When wireless communication is part of the system’s operational capability, these scenarios need to be reproduced under controlled and repeatable LOS conditions.
A controllable and repeatable measurement environment that reflects the operational real-world environment makes it possible to:

  • verify the antenna’s directional characteristics
  • identify weak directions and shadowing
  • optimise antenna placement
  • evaluate communication performance
  • compare different designs
  • repeat the same measurement under identical conditions

The same challenge appears across many modern defence systems – from reconnaissance drones and unmanned ground vehicles to tactical radio systems, Counter-UAS and other autonomous platforms. What they have in common is that wireless communication cannot be fully assessed until the complete system is integrated.

When communication problems are discovered in the field, it is too late
Discovering communication problems first during flight testing or operational evaluation often means that changes become both time-consuming and costly. The goal is not to replace flight testing, but to give development teams the ability to identify and address weaknesses earlier in the development process.

This requires test solutions that make advanced OTA testing of complete systems more accessible and cost-effective. It allows necessary testing to be performed earlier in the development process and directly in the development environment.

RanLOS develops accessible and cost-effective OTA test solutions that enable this under controlled and repeatable LOS conditions. Instead of relying solely on large external test facilities, development teams can perform more tests, evaluate design changes faster and make decisions based on actual measurement data.

When wireless communication is critical to the mission, it is not enough to know that the individual components work. What matters is the ability to test, evaluate and optimise the communication performance of the complete system before it is used in critical operational environments.

RanLOS tar nästa steg i CATARC-projektet

2026-08-14
Press release

RanLOS tar nästa steg i CATARC-projektet

OTA testing of drone C2 links

OTA testing of drone C2 links

Below you can find an introduction to our white paper “WP103: OTA testing of drone C2 links”. You can also find a link to download the full white paper in English for free.

OTA testing of drone C2 links

Introduction
The C2 (Command & Control) link is the drone’s lifeline. It carries control commands on the uplink and telemetry on the downlink, and is decisive for flight safety, certification and the ability to operate beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). A link that loses margin at the wrong range, the wrong orientation, or in the presence of an interferer can, in the worst case, mean loss of control of the aircraft. Under EU Regulation 2019/947, BVLOS operations fall into the Specific or Certified category, where demonstrated performance – not just design compliance – is increasingly important.

Today, link stability is verified primarily through field testing: the drone is flown at various distances and the link behavior observed. This method is weather-dependent, requires airspace clearance, is hard to repeat, and gives late and costly feedback when a design needs to change. Root causes are also difficult to isolate when everything varies at once.

With RanLOS test solutions, the measurement moves into a controlled chamber or test environment. Distance, drone orientation and interference can be controlled exactly and repeatably – making it possible to characterize antenna performance, link quality and interference resilience systematically, rather than by trial and error. This white paper describes how.

Download the full white paper "WP103: OTA testing of drone C2 links" for free below

Conclusion
With RanLOS test solutions, a drone’s C2 link can be characterized in full in a stable, controlled chamber or test environment – covering 3D radiation pattern and distance sensitivity, active throughput and threshold measurements, and interference resilience and methodology. This enables the engineer to develop robust communication solutions systematically and safely, with higher repeatability than field testing and without trial and error.

“To develop and verify drone C2 systems, test methods must reflect the flight conditions and radio link dynamics in which the system is actually intended to operate.”

Why OTA testing matters for V2V communication

Why OTA testing matters for V2V communication

Below you can find an introduction to our white paper “Why OTA testing matters for V2V communication”. You can also find a link to download the full white paper in English for free.

OTA testing for V2V communication

Introduction: Why OTA testing matters for V2V communication
Wireless communication is becoming an increasingly important part of modern vehicles. Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication enables cars to exchange real-time data about position, speed and driving conditions, including safety-critical messages that help prevent collisions and support cooperative driving. V2V is one part of the broader Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) ecosystem, which extends to communication with infrastructure, networks and other road users. What all these applications have in common is a requirement that cannot fail: a stable and reliable wireless communication link.

Traditional measurement methods, where antennas and radio components are tested separately, often with the antenna measured in isolation in an anechoic chamber, provide valuable insights but do not capture how the complete system behaves during real operation. Once the antenna is integrated into the vehicle, its performance is influenced by the body shape, material selection and nearby components. As a result, actual radio performance often differs from what was theoretically expected. This is where OTA testing (Over-The-Air) becomes essential: by testing the complete, integrated system in a controlled radio environment, it becomes possible to measure how communication actually performs.

At the same time, vehicles do not operate in a single, uniform radio environment. Two vehicles approaching each other on a highway or at a rural intersection communicate via a link dominated by a direct signal path, known as a LOS environment (Line-of-Sight). In dense urban traffic, a vehicle is surrounded by reflections from buildings and other vehicles. This is approximated in testing by a RIMP (Rich Isotropic Multipath) environment – a standardized reference case where signals arrive equally from all directions. LOS and RIMP represent opposite ends of the spectrum, and each reveals different characteristics of a system’s performance.

For V2V communication specifically, there is an additional factor: the relative angle between vehicles is constantly changing. One may approach head-on, cross from the side or overtake from behind. It is this continuous shift in geometry, and not just the environment itself, that makes V2V one of the more demanding wireless applications to test correctly. The RLOS model (Random Line-of-Sight) is designed to capture exactly this.

Download the full white paper "WP102: Why OTA testing matters for V2V communication" for free below

Conclusion
V2V communication places unique demands on wireless system performance. Safety-critical messages must get through reliably – under continuously changing vehicle orientations, at varying distances and without a second chance. As this paper has shown, the difference between a system that performs and one that fails can be as little as 1–2 dB of received signal variation.

The scenarios that matter most for V2V performance – highway driving, rural roads, approaching intersections, long-range cooperative driving – are dominated by direct line-of-sight conditions. In these situations, the angle between communicating vehicles changes continuously: approaching head-on, crossing paths at an intersection, overtaking on a motorway. The RLOS model captures exactly this – the full range of antenna angles a real deployment will encounter, without multipath to mask weak directions. These are the conditions where performance margins are thinnest, and where controlled LOS/RLOS testing reveals what matters.

Controlled LOS/RLOS testing enables the development decisions that matter: identifying coverage nulls before they become field problems, quantifying how much diversity gain different antenna placements actually provide, and understanding at what signal level the communication link becomes unreliable. These are the answers that antenna engineers, system integrators and OEM development teams need – and they are most clearly obtained in a controlled, repeatable LOS environment, at a stage when changes are still practical.

The critical question is not whether the system works under ideal test conditions – but whether it works when it matters most. That is the question LOS/RLOS-based testing, realized through RanLOS test systems, is designed to answer.

“To develop and verify V2V systems, test methods must reflect the radio environments in which the systems are actually intended to operate.”

RanLOS-PR

Ordern i korthet:

Introduction: How and why do drones need to be tested?
Drones and UAV systems have rapidly evolved from niche technologies into a central part of modern industry, infrastructure, and security. Today, they are used in everything from industrial inspection and autonomous transportation systems to advanced defense applications. What all these applications have in common is a requirement that cannot fail: a stable and reliable wireless communication link.

Traditional measurement methods, where antennas and other radio components are tested separately – with the antenna often measured in anechoic chambers – provide valuable insights but do not capture how the complete system behaves during real operation. Once the antenna is integrated into the drone, its performance is influenced by the mechanical design, material selection, and interaction with other components. As a result, actual radio performance often differs from what was theoretically expected. This is where OTA testing (Over-The-Air) becomes essential. By testing the complete system in a controlled radio environment, it becomes possible to measure how communication actually performs under conditions that more closely resemble real-world operation.

At the same time, it is important to understand that drones do not operate in a single, uniform radio environment. Communication requirements vary depending on the application and surrounding environment. A drone operating in an urban environment is surrounded by reflections from buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure – a so-called RIMP environment (Rich Isotropic Multipath). A drone flying over open fields, conflict zones, or a high-altitude UAV, on the other hand, operates in a radio link that is effectively dominated by a direct signal path – a LOS environment (Line-of-Sight). These two environments place different demands on drone antenna performance and may expose different types of weaknesses in the system design. In practice, this means that both complex multipath environments and scenarios dominated by direct line-of-sight communication need to be analyzed. The following section introduces these two reference environments – RIMP and LOS – which are based on research from Chalmers University of Technology, led by Professor Per-Simon Kildal and further developed together with Jan Carlsson and colleagues. Together, they form the theoretical framework for this type of OTA testing and provide the foundation for this white paper.

Finally, it is worth noting that many modern drone applications, particularly within industry and defense, largely operate in environments where line-of-sight conditions dominate. This means that understanding how the antenna behaves across different directions and orientations is often critical to real-world system performance – and is therefore especially well captured through LOS-based testing in controlled test environments.

Two complementary test environments
Research conducted at Chalmers University of Technology by Professor Per-Simon Kildal and his colleagues (Carlsson, Carlberg & Kildal, LAPC 2012, as well as Kildal & Carlsson, 2013) established a theoretical framework for OTA testing based on two defined reference environments: RIMP (Rich Isotropic Multipath) and LOS (Line-of-Sight). In this context, LOS is used as the overarching concept, while RLOS (Random Line-of-Sight) describes the statistical model used to analyze variations related to random drone orientation.

These environments represent two extremes in how radio waves behave in reality. Although practical scenarios are often located somewhere between them, this distinction makes it possible to analyze and understand different aspects of wireless system performance in a structured manner.

In a RIMP environment, the signal propagates through many paths and reaches the receiver from multiple directions, which is typical for urban areas and complex installations. In a LOS environment, communication is instead dominated by a direct signal path, which is common in open environments or high-altitude operation.

The two environments highlight different characteristics of antenna and communication systems:

  • RIMP provides insight into how the system performs in complex multipath environments
  • RLOS demonstrates how antenna directional characteristics influence the communication link under line-of-sight conditions

Conclusion
Drones operate across a broad spectrum of radio environments – from complex multipath propagation in urban areas to open line-of-sight conditions in rural environments and at high altitude. Each environment places different demands on antenna and system performance and may reveal different types of weaknesses in the design.

Research from Chalmers University of Technology has established a clear framework in which RIMP and LOS represent two complementary extremes. Together, they provide deep insight into how wireless systems behave under real operating conditions.

For development and verification, this means:
• RIMP testing provides insight into system performance in complex multipath environments
• LOS-based testing reveals how antenna directional characteristics affect the communication link under line-of-sight conditions
• The combination of these methods reduces the risk of hidden weaknesses that could otherwise lead to communication failures or failure to meet regulatory requirements

At the same time, practical applications show that many drone systems largely operate in environments where line-of-sight conditions dominate. In these cases, LOS-based testing becomes particularly relevant – and RanLOS CATR-based solutions make it possible to perform this type of testing in a repeatable and development-oriented manner.

This means that line-of-sight scenarios can be reproduced in laboratory environments and integrated as a continuous part of the development process, enabling faster iteration, improved decision-making, and reduced risk in later stages.

“For many drone applications, the critical question is not whether the system works in an ideal test environment – but whether it works in reality. That is the question LOS-based testing – realized through RanLOS test systems – is designed to answer.”
